Holidays in Whitsand Bay

Self-catering holiday cottages in Whitsand Bay

Get away to a forgotten corner of Cornwall, with 3 miles of silky sand and the best surfing beaches this side of the coast.

Arrive at low tide on Cornwall’s south east coast between Rame Head and Portwrinkle, and Whitsand Bay will greet you with a 3-mile stretch of stunning beach. Come at high tide, and you’ll find the four golden, sandy beaches of Tregantle, Sharrow Point, Freathy, and Tregonhawke backed by sheer cliffs.

There are activities for all here when staying in one of our self-catering holiday cottages in Whitsand Bay. Most recently, it was home to divers who visited the HMS Scylla, an ex-naval frigate sunk in 2004 to form an artificial reef. It attracts fascinating sea life, and therefore, the rock pools and harbour attract visitors. Check the swell direction if you’re a keen surfer – Whitsand could be a go and is the only surfing beach on the south coast for a good 50 miles.

Close to Whitsand lies the fishing villages of Polperro and Looe – ideal starting points to explore this part of Cornwall, with a range of walks along the South West Coast Path for all abilities. Prefer your fun with a club and golf ball in hand? Golfers should make their way to the 18-hole golf course.

The details

Food and drink

Perched high on the cliffs, enjoy sharing platters and wine at The View cafe while gazing far west to Goonhilly on The Lizard. Refuel at the Cliff Top cafe, serving all-day breakfasts and lunchtime specials with sparkling sea views.

Can I bring my dog?

Whitsand Beach is a dog-friendly beach, and with 3 miles of sand to play on, you’ll easily be able to tire your best friend out. Don’t forget that, while not all Cornish beaches allow dogs, they are welcome on the entire 630-mile stretch of the South West Coast Path.

Accessibility

Whitsand Bay is flanked by steep cliffs, and access can be tricky. There are four access points at Tregantle, Sharrow Point, Freathy, and Tregonhawke, but all are steep and unsuitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.
