Gentle waves lap onto shingle shores at this hidden Cornish gem
Kingsand sits on the Rame Peninsula, a National Landscape, and is the perfect place for birdwatching on coastal ambles. This former fishing and smuggling village is known for its narrow, cottage-lined streets and three secluded beaches. The iconic Clocktower overlooks Girt Beach, a small shingle bay. On the other side, you will find the main beach, slightly wider and sandier, which backs onto the Cleave. A short walk out of the village will take you to the rockpool-dotted Sandways Beach. Or, if you are feeling energetic, the high cliffs and stretching sands of Whitsand Bay are just over 5 miles away along the South West Coast Path.
It is rare to hear about Kingsand without mention of its neighbouring twin village of Cawsand, but things weren’t always this way. Up until the mid-1800s, the two villages were actually in different counties, their boundary marked by a small stream. Sitting side by side, head to the neighbouring area, where you will find the Cawsand Ferry chugging across the Cornwall-Devon border to Plymouth. Listen to the clang of anchors and the squawk of seagulls on route to Plymouth’s city centre, abundant with cafes, pubs and shops.
