Enjoy a staycation in Widemouth Bay

Sunsets, rock pools, surf, and sand combine with the iconic Black Rock taking centre stage. Escape to one of our Widemouth Bay cottages for a holiday to remember.

Wind along the Atlantic Highway and Widemouth Bay will open up in front of you – a wide canvas of fun for a self-catering holiday.

Located a few miles south of Bude on Cornwall’s north coast, Widemouth’s small village and beach remain ruggedly unspoilt; a Beach Retreat for those looking to get away from it all and who enjoy making their own fun.

Backed by low cliffs and surrounded by fascinating rock formations, the wide, sandy beach gives way at low tide to a myriad of rock pools, ideal for families to explore on a holiday in Widemouth Bay. To the south, Black Rock rises out of the ocean, marking the beginning of the beach’s dog-friendly section.

This lesser-known surf spot will surprise wave lovers – an excellent place for both beginner and experienced surfers. Exposed to the brunt of Atlantic swells, you’re able to experience a variety of peaks across the entire stretch, with a sand or reef bottom producing gentle to heavy barrelling waves. There are a number of surf schools and hire places to choose from. RNLI Lifeguards operate during peak periods of the year.

Choose one of our holiday cottages in Widemouth Bay this year, and make your stay perfect.

The details

Food and drink

Self-catering holidays in Widemouth Bay call for good food. With views over the bay, Beach House combines a contemporary menu with a beach bar and takeaway in the summer months. The Bay View Inn offers good family pub food with a relaxed and bustling atmosphere. A number of cafes also serve coffee and sandwiches after a hard morning on the beach. Further along the road to Bude, Elements Italian-inspired menu is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Can I bring my dogs?

Dogs are welcome on Widemouth year-round, provided you stick to the southern section of the beach, near Black Rock. A seasonal dog ban runs on the northern part of the beach between 10am and 6pm from 15 May until 30 September. Dogs are also welcome on the entire 630-mile stretch of the South West Coast Path, with the walk to Bude along the coast and through farmland being great for children and dogs alike.

Accessibility

There are two car parks at Widemouth offering access to the beach, one at Black Rock and another at the northern end, where you’ll also find WCs.

A disabled ramp and railing have been installed at the northern end, providing wheelchair access onto the beach. At Black Rock, the beach can be accessed via a short slope.
