The best thing about:

A renovated 18th century fisherman's cottage – just a short walk from the harbour and village with a growing foodie reputation.

The walk to the beach

500m to the harbour or 750m to the beach.

Where is it?

Located between the Lizard Peninsula and Penzance on Cornwall's south coast, Porthleven is a beautiful unspoilt fishing village and harbour - the UK's most southerly working port. It's a place for all seasons; ice creams, crabbing and jumping from the pier is the norm in summer, while come winter, spray-flying storms break over the iconic clock tower.

Porthleven beach is popular with families with plenty of rockpools to explore and an RNLI lifeguard service in peak season. See the harbour from a different angle with stand-up paddleboard hire, or learn to surf at one of the nearby beaches Praa Sands or Poldhu Cove.

Foodies take note - Porthleven is fast becoming known as a top food destination with Rick Stein's, the AA-awarded Kota, Asian-inspired Kota Kai, Amelie's, The Square and Seadrift restaurants making eating out a must. Don't miss the Porthleven Food and Drink Festival in April, celebrating fresh local produce with celebrity chefs, music and entertainment.

The property

Tucked away from the main road, this property is just two minutes from the harbour and village amenities and a five-minute walk to long sand and shingle beach between Porthleven and Halzephron.

Inside

Tom's Cottage, a traditional 18th century fisherman's cottage, has been beautifully restored to offer modern comfort whilst retaining immense period character with slate and wooden floors, deep slate windowsills, exposed stonework, low beams, a log burner and an original 200-year old staircase (which is steep with low ceiling and can require careful navigation).

  • Three storey open-plan living.
  • Quirky design-led features throughout, including Eames furniture and Ed Carpenter lighting.
  • Ground floor open-plan living area with wood burning stove, television and DVD player.
  • Downstairs to the kitchen area with oven, hob, extractor, microwave, fridge freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer.
  • Wi-Fi, selection of books, games and DVDs, hairdryer, iron and ironing board.
  • Central heating throughout.

Sleeping and bathroom

  • Large open double bedroom with exposed beams with apex ceiling upstairs.
  • Downstairs to the bathroom with stand-alone roll-top bath, hand-held shower, heated towel rail, basin and WC (limited headroom in places with the original lintels).

Outside

  • One in a row of original terraced cottages.
  • Terraced shared-access gardens and courtyard with benches to the rear of the property - perfect for eating breakfast in the sunshine.
  • Un-allocated on-street parking directly outside the cottage.

Need to know

  • Sorry, no smoking inside the cottage.
  • Two small well-behaved dogs welcome on the ground floor (kitchen, hall, bathroom) - enquire for more information (additional charge applies).
  • Not suitable for anyone with mobility problems as the cottage has original-feature steep steps and low granite lintels.
  • Please be aware there is limited head space in the hallway and bathroom.
  • Refundable damage deposit of £50, due with full balance.
  • Short breaks available outside of school holidays.
  • Book a 3 or 5 night break and get an extra 2 nights free. This offer is only available after October half-term and before Easter, excluding school holidays. Only available to book by telephone on 01637 861005.

What can I walk to?

  • All of Porthleven's attractions and amenities including restaurants, pubs, cafes, galleries, ice cream parlour, mini-supermarket, post office and fish and chip shop are a short walk away.
  • Porthleven Harbour - unspoilt working harbour with iconic clock tower and pier.
  • Rick Stein's - modern interior and great food inspired by Rick's travels.
  • Kota Restaurant - AA awarded restaurant headed by TV chef Jude Kereama.
  • The Ship Inn - iconic 17th century fisherman's pub.
  • The Atlantic Inn - the spot for a sundowner with views over the ocean.
  • Porthleven beach - quintessential Cornish sand and pebble beach, lifeguarded in-season.
  • National Trust's Penrose Estate and Looe Bar - natural sand bank and large wooded estate linking to the South West Coast Path.
