Begin where land meets sea on the golden sands of Portreath beach. Enclosed by dramatic cliffs and sloped with soft sand, it’s a beach that’s shaped by tides and time.
At low tide, search for Lady Basset’s Baths – carved into the cliffside just above the shoreline. These tide-filled rock pools were created in the 1780s for the aristocracy’s sea bathing, offering a curious glimpse into the past. There are eight baths in total at Portreath – next time you visit, try to spot them all.
On days when the sea is calm, the nearby tidal pool is a tranquil spot for a dip, its stillness contrasting with the restless Atlantic beyond (which is great for bodyboarding).
Portreath’s coastline hides stories of smugglers and seafarers. The sea caves at the edge of the cliffs once concealed contraband, spirited in under cover of darkness. Look out to the horizon and imagine the sailing ships arriving at the harbour, unloading Welsh coal and setting off with Cornish copper.
Walkers are spoilt for choice. To the left of the beach, follow the South West Coast Path up the headland towards North Cliffs and Carvannel Downs – where waves crash below and kestrels hover overhead.
Or head right, to Lighthouse Hill and The Pepperpot, a tiny, turreted landmark above the harbour, where sea pinks bloom along the path in spring. From here, views stretch out across the curve of the bay and into the wild blue beyond.
In the heart of the village, the historic harbour still shelters boats that bob on the tide. Though the copper trams are long gone, the quiet rhythm of coastal life continues.
Food and drink
Pick up a fresh smoothie or colourful salad from Pod Café, where the courtyard seating is ideal for people-watching in the sun. Later, head to The Atlantic for a hearty plate of fish and chips with a side of sea breeze.
A short drive inland brings you to North Cliff Dairy – a working farm that produces its own impossibly creamy ice cream. Take your cone out into the field and watch the cows.
For a change of scenery, Tehidy Country Park invites a different kind of exploration. This expansive nature reserve is a world of tall trees, winding paths, and rustling wildlife.
In spring, the forest floor is thick with bluebells and squirrels jump from branch to branch. Pack a picnic and lose yourself among the oaks and quiet pools.
