A narrow, pristine beach overlooked by grassy cliffs, Trevone is a quiet idyll just two miles from the popular seaside town of Padstow.

We speak to the owners of Trevone Stores and Trevone Farm Shop about how they’ve been connected to this stretch of coast and its hidden treasures since their early childhoods – including a beloved tidal pool, a mighty blowhole, a long strip of lavish sand and a vast network of rockpools.

“BEST PLACE IN THE WORLD”

Jack works at Trevone Beach Stores, running the shop, café, restaurant and Bruno’s bar. From the outdoor seating area of his business, gazing seaward there are elevated views over the long stretch of sand at low tide – perfect for checking the surf conditions he’s been enjoying since he was a child.

Jack’s family has been running Trevone Beach Stores for over 35 years and “is catered to beach users and people coming to the beach with their families and wanting their bucket and spades and branded stuff,” Jack explains. “Then we have an ice cream parlour that gets very busy in the summer.”

Just 100 metres from the shop door is a small set of steps which lead towards the beach and medley of ocean-related activities. “Fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, diving. There’s so much to do in the sea,” Jack explains. En route, a sauna with sea views provides the perfect stop off point for a quiet moment before or after the day’s antics.

Recognising Trevone as the “best place in the world”, in recent years Trevone Beach Stores has expanded to include a relaxing place to eat from breakfast until the evening. They serve refreshing pints of local beer, big breakfasts, freshly caught seafood, street food and woodfired pizzas from their outdoor pizza oven.

“I’ve lived five minutes from this beach since I was ten years old and there is just everything.”

“I like to think of it like an après-surf bar really. People spend the day at the beach and then they come down after and, you know, enjoy a beer and some nice food in the sun,” says Jack. During the warmer months they also host live music, local bands and have speciality lobster and brisket nights.

For those looking to explore the local area beyond the ocean, “I’d definitely go and check out the round hole on the top on the right for natural sightseeing and then also walking the coast off to the right you can go and see the old lighthouse by Crugmeer which is also quite nice”, Jack suggests. “Apart from that I think it’s just enjoying the beach down here, and the café and the beer.”

LOCAL CONNECTIONS

Around the corner, Maddie runs Trevone Farm Shop, where she sources local produce, Cornish jams, chutneys, cheeses, and artisanal gifts – all of which are beautifully presented on shelves making for an extremely satisfying shopping experience.

“Our best selling products are probably bakery and butchery”, says Maddie. “Bakery we are supplied by Malcom Barnecutt’s in St Merryn and our butchery is Williams & Son Butchers in Wadebridge.” Trevone Farm Shop also supplies welcome hampers for visitors to the area.

Originally a working farm run by her step-dad, Maddie has seen the family business transition and helped to create the farm shop thirteen years ago. Having grown up on the land, she also has a deep connection to the bay and its natural playground.

“I’ve lived five minutes from this beach since I was ten years old and there is just everything,” Maddie says. “It’s a really safe beach and it’s brilliant for swimming, rock-pooling, wildlife. You’ve got both the sandy beach and the rocky beach and then we’ve got a natural swimming beach on top of that which is just amazing.”

A self-confessed nature lover, one of Maddie’s greatest joys is exploring Trevone’s rockpools and birdwatching with her children. “At the rocky beach we’ve got the most amazing array of wildlife in those rock pools which is fantastic… It’s just fabulous. A great place for families of all generations.”

This summer, could Trevone Beach be your beach?
