Mawgan Porth: Something of everything

Despite its diminutive size running along the shoreline, there’s a great community living and working at and around the beach. We spoke to a restauranteur and cider maker to sample the scene…

“I think it’s got something of everything. You can literally turn up and not move, you know, for the duration of your stay. Other than the glorious sea and just jumping in the water and an endless sand beach, it’s got everything from a delicatessen to a good pub, good fish and chips, and of course a really good seafood restaurant, even crazy golf if you need it.”

Avis Galvin, co-owner of Mawgan Porth restaurant Catch, reels off just some of what’s on offer right by the beach and a little further in land.

Avis firmly believes a whole holiday can be taken care of in this one stop. Catch has stayed put for 10 years.

“I can’t believe the time’s gone so fast,” says Avis. “It’s been 10 wonderful years just getting to know the locality and all the people we see year after year, lots of regular customers have come back across the whole 10 years.”

Catch is a proud supporter of local fishing fleets and the Cornwall Good Seafood Guide, welcoming in lobster deliveries fresh off the boat and into the kitchen.

The Catch menu is full of local producers. And the village of St Mawgan – along the river into the valley – is the home of a hyper local artisan cider producer The Bearded Brewery.

Down the road from Catch, The Bearded Brewery offers cider tasting with a sea view in its Mawgan Porth shop.

Sparky, co-founder of the brewery, tells us how he joined forces with business partner Rob over takeaways on a Monday night making homemade brews. As the business grew, they set down their cider making roots in a derelict building on the Carnanton estate just outside St Mawgan. Now, they offer a wide range of ciders – made by hand, using British apples, carrying their distinctive biker culture design – all available in ready to share pouches.

“The three litre pouches are mainly so that you can pick one up and have a party with it; basically you can take it to the beach or a picnic, a friend’s wedding; the three litre pouch is just enough cider for any occasion,” says Sparky.

From its foundation eight years ago, The Bearded Brewery, has spread its reach across north Cornwall, with cider tasting, branded t-shirts and cider pouches available on the seafront in Mawgan Porth. “Mawgan Porth is a beautiful little village. The people there are amazing,” adds Sparky.
