Home / Secret Season: Mevagissey
Discover a Cornish harbour village with a bustling fishing culture and untouched surrounding coastline.
As the first light of day spills across the south coast, Mevagissey wakes slowly. Down by the harbour, the sunrise catches the water at just the right angle, casting golden streaks across the rippling surface.
A few fishermen work quietly on their boats, getting ready to head out with the tide. It’s a proper Cornish working harbour – a jumble of colourful vessels, nets neatly coiled, gulls calling overhead.
From the village, follow the coast path towards Portmellon. This short walk hugs the shoreline, revealing secluded views along the way. At Portmellon Beach, you might spot a seal or two bobbing in the calm water.
Take a brisk morning dip or simply sit with a coffee from The Shack, watching the tide ease its way in.
Heading back to Mevagissey, the view opens up to a scatter of pastel-coloured houses stacked along the hillside. The village starts to come to life, with the day’s visitors wandering down for breakfast with a view.
Wander through the winding streets, where independent shops line the narrow lanes. Start with a flat white from Cubs Coffee, a stylish little spot loved by locals.
Browse shops with something for everyone, from pet boutiques to leather workshops and a wonderful array of homeware and gifts.
For lunch, head to She Sells, perched overlooking the harbour. Their menu is a playful mix of Baker Tom’s buns stuffed with local cheeses, French-style pancakes, loaded milkshakes and indulgent sundaes – all served with a view.
Grab ice cream from their hatch or wander next door to their gift shop filled with jewellery, homeware and thoughtful finds.
In the afternoon, linger by the harbour. This is where Mevagissey’s personality really shines. You might spot artists perched along the dock painting the busy scene, fishermen repainting their boats, or groups gathering to chat as Cornish folk music drifts through the air.
Even in the cooler months, the village hums with its own gentle rhythm.
As evening settles, head to Sharksfin on the waterfront for dinner – a striking traditional building serving up fresh seafood with harbour views.
Mevagissey is a village with soul: quirky, independent and full of stories. Out of season, when the summer crowds have gone, its charm deepens. The harbour walls offer shelter from wilder weather, the coast path remains just as beautiful, and there’s a wonderful mix of places to eat, drink and explore. This is Cornwall at its most authentic – a place to slow down, breathe in the sea air, and experience a true working harbour through a quieter lens.
Stay close to Mevagissey and explore out of season – stay amongst the trees at Haven Retreat in Gorran Haven, just along the coast. Or opt for a large home with its own private beach at Point House in Duporth.
