Our owners often ask about how they can further enhance their property for guests. One of the most popular upgrades we are asked about is the installation of a multi-fuel or wood-burning stove.
And it’s an appealing proposition, often asked for by guests, and perfect for attracting bookings in the quieter winter months. After all, where better to relax in front of after a bracing walk along the beach than in front of a roaring fire with a hot chocolate or glass of red wine?
– Safety is paramount so employ an expert to install your stove. Use a HETAS (Heating Equipment Testing and Approval Scheme) qualified installer who will be able to advise on location, size etc.
– Upon installation, review and revise the Fire Risk Assessment document in the property.
– Consider the safety of children in the guest party – a guard to go around the stove will help.
– Provide clear instructions for guests who wish to use the stove, as many will be unfamiliar with how to use them correctly.
– Provide materials (logs, peat blocks, smokeless coal) for guests during the winter, along with directions to local suppliers so they can buy more during their stay.
– Once installed, take a photograph of the room, with stove burning and slightly lowered lighting to create an appealing, cosy image.
– Factor in the cleaning and maintenance of stoves during changeovers, ensuring you have the right materials to dispose of ash and have the stove ready for your next guests.
A stove is a significant investment running into the thousands for purchase and installation, but can help reduce heating costs in the winter and attract extra bookings through traditionally quiet months.
