Home / Shaped by the shoreline: Perranporth
Shaped by tides, swells and shifting light, Perranporth is a busy town in rhythm with the sea, inspiring dynamic businesses, grounded in nature and a love of the ocean
A quintessential surf town, Perranporth draws families in search of the classic bucket-and-spade holiday. With three miles of golden sand, surf most days of the year, and the UK’s only pub set directly on the beach, it’s easy to see why this spot has been a favourite with holidaymakers for over a century.
Crowned by Chapel Rock – often silhouetted against glowing Cornish sunsets – the beach may look picture-perfect, but it’s more than that – shaping the community that lives here. Form small sustainable brands to surf schools that care, life here is shaped by the shore.
Julian from Stoked Surf School brings an energetic and personal approach to surf coaching in Perranporth, a place he describes as “a surfer’s paradise.” With a deep love for the ocean and a passion for helping others find their feet on a board, his school is built around making surfing fun, approachable, and high quality.
“If you’re thinking about coming surfing… It’s our job to make you guys feel as comfortable as possible. All you need is some swimwear, a towel, plenty of enthusiasm, and you will have the best time ever,” he smiles.
“There’s always waves to be had [at Perranporth]. It’s so big. You’ve got different parts to the beach, different areas. So there’s always somewhere to find some good waves,” Julian says. “You do have to abide by the lifeguards. They’re down there to keep us safe, and they do a great job for all of us…so it’s a safe place to learn, surf and play.”
Julian prides himself on offering something unique: a surf school that provides quality instruction, and a genuine understanding of surfing and how to improve. He has developed a “surfing ability measure” called Loop – a tool that helps beginners track their progress and build confidence in the water.
“We guarantee that you’ll be standing up in no time,” he says, a reflection of his eagerness to support visitors on building a lasting connection with the ocean.
Just a stone’s throw from the sea – another local business finds daily inspiration in Perranporth’s shifting shoreline in sustainable craftsmanship. At Atlantic Blankets, the coast influences everything, from colour palettes and materials to the way the business is run.
“The main ethos behind Atlantic Blankets is sustainability and accountability,” says director Al. The company uses recycled yarns and wool, partnering with mills throughout the UK on production.
Protecting the environment that inspires them is just as important as drawing creative energy from it.
“We don’t work with mills over Europe or China,” Al explains. “And we have a zero plastic policy – so all of our parcels are packed in recycled materials.”
For Al, the sea isn’t just a scenic backdrop – it’s how he chooses to live. When he’s not working, you’ll often find him on the sand with his family.
“We surf a lot. We’ve got young children. They’re part of the Surf Lifesaving Club, which is really good. They learn about all the rip currents and the tides and everything, which is really important… We just try to get out there and enjoy living where we live.”
