Secret Season: Mawgan Porth

In summer, Mawgan Porth is a wide sweep of golden sand backed by grassy dunes where beachgoers enjoy the long warm evenings. But when winter arrives, this north coast beach reveals a very different personality – one that’s rugged and elemental. Discover the secret magic of this north coast beach out of season.

Mawgan Porth comes to life with coastal energy in the colder months. Huge Atlantic swells roll in and crash against the shore, sending sea spray into the air. Light shifts constantly across the water, from steel blue to silver to deep green. Its a demonstration of how alive the coast can feel in winter.

This stretch of coastline is made for walking when the air is crisp and clear. Set out along the coast path towards Watergate Bay, or head the other way, following the rugged trail towards the iconic rock stacks at Bedruthan Steps.

The path rises and falls, revealing ever-changing views, and this quieter season brings rewards for those who look closely. Dolphins, seals and even whales are regularly spotted offshore, riding the winter swells just beyond the headlands.

Mid-walk, warm hands around a takeaway cup from The Beach Box – perfect for hot drinks and quick snacks – or push on towards Carnewas Tea Rooms near Bedruthan, where a pot of tea and a slice of cake tastes all the better after a blustery stretch of coast path.

Back in Mawgan Porth village, winter is the time to linger indoors. Catch offers refined seafood in a cosy, welcoming setting – the sort of place where you can settle in, thaw out and savour the flavours of the coast long after the walk is done.

For deeper restoration, head inland to Wildwood Spa, tucked into woodland just beyond the beach.

Here, Nordic-style hot tubs, saunas and ice baths sit beneath the trees, steam rising into cold air as you soak sore muscles and slow your breathing – a perfect counterpoint to the wild energy of the shore.

As the day draws to a close, return to the clifftops and wait. If you’re lucky enough to have some winter sun, watch as Mawgan Porth is bathed in soft pinks and fiery oranges as the sun dips low.
