SENNEN’S HERITAGE GALLERY

The Roundhouse and Capstan Gallery in Sennen is a curiosity cabinet of Cornwall-inspired and made art and crafts – in a building steeped in the region’s fishing heritage.

Roundhouse Gallery, Sennen

A gallery for more than 40 years, The Roundhouse and Capstan was taken over by artists Sally Peterson and Colin Caffell in 2010. Open all year with shorter hours in the winter months, the gallery is a visual library of the inspiration the Penwith landscape has long provided.

Showing work by established names and emerging talent, as well as hosting a diversity of paintings, there’s work by sculptors, potters, jewellers, photographers and printmakers.

Local connections

Established names on show, include ceramics made by co-owner Colin Caffell, and paintings by Michael Praed and John Piper.

Caffell’s portfolio includes an iconic bronze sculptor of a tin miner at work standing tall outside Geevor Tin Mine, not far away at Pendeen. Read Made with Penwith to see examples of different artwork inspired by the landscapes around Sennen.

And follow the gallery on Instagram to see work by long-standing and new artists on show upstairs in the Roundhouse or downstairs around the capstan wheel.

That wheel was once pushed around by fisherman to haul boats up onto dry land after a day out a sea.

Upstairs in the Roundhouse there’s also a wide range of gifts available, from Cornish candles through to handmade jewellery; handy for picking-up an unexpected gift as the giving season approaches.
