Cawsand in watercolour

Among pastel houses with shuttered windows, cobbled slipways, moored fishing boats and sun-warmed stone, Cawsand appears like a watercolour painting. For artist and producer Rosanna Ceredig-Evans, that’s exactly what it became.

This week, Rosanna joined us on the sand in Cawsand for a creative take on this hidden corner of Cornwall as part of our Your Beach. Found takeover.

With brushes and watercolours in hand, she captured the vibrant, Mediterranean-feeling shoreline in real time, sat cross-legged on the beach as swimmers waded through calm shallows and kayaks set out for a day of exploration.

“I’ve been painting all my life, or as long as I can remember anyway. My mum’s an artist, so all creative subjects were really encouraged growing up. I’ve got fond memories of painting and drawing, doing anything to do with art and design in my spare time.”

Inspired by her surroundings and often working in the open air, Rosanna has developed a practice that blends observation, texture and mood. “I love working with watercolour. It’s such a great medium. It dries quickly, it’s so easy to travel with – it’s a good match.”

When she’s not working from her studio in Cornwall, Rosanna often travels abroad in search of creative stimulation. “I love Italy and I have done for as long as I can remember. It holds a very special place in my heart and has been a huge inspiration for all of my work. It’s like a home from home.”

Capturing the coast

“My work has always started with initial drawings or just black ink, actually, whether from a paintbrush or some of my homemade tools. I then work back into them using watercolour when the ink’s dried, or vice versa—it really kind of depends on the mood I’m in.”

In Cawsand, the mood was bright and breezy. A summer morning, with boats gently bobbing and colourful parasols opening along the bay.

“It’s been amazing to be here at Cawsand,” Rosanna reflects. “To be somewhere new is always so inspiring – the cobbled streets and the coloured houses, and there is an element of island life, being in Europe as well, with the boats. And I love people-watching, so it’s been a wonderful experience to capture all of that on a lovely sunny day.”
