We’re delighted to speak to Nikki, the owner of The Brigantine. This cliff-top retreat overlooking Portreath Beach has an exquisite and characterful design and interiors which tell a tale of love, family, dedication and craftmanship.
Built by the owner’s late father, a skilled carpenter and passionate boat builder, the property is a true labour of love. His craftsmanship can be traced throughout the house, from the handcrafted wooden features to the boat-inspired details that reflect his lifelong love for the sea.
The home was originally designed as a retirement retreat for the owner’s parents, but after the unexpected loss of her father in 2014. Nikki couldn’t bear to sell the space her father had put so much love into, and instead, it’s now shared with guests who can appreciate its exquisite craftsmanship.
Which is your favourite room in the house and why?
"The pool is an obvious favourite. It was started by my late father (foundations/concrete/concept) – a spontaneous addition to the original plans, requiring a costly redesign and structural work that delayed its completion. Unfortunately, my parents weren’t able to finish it, so it was an honour to complete it in their memory. It has had two generations of work to complete it to the standard it is now. I completed the tiling and finishes myself two years ago.
"My dad used to joke about putting a mermaid design at the bottom of the pool, but my mum and I always said, “No way, we are having a merman”. It was a big thing we joked about, and we’re yet to put anything there at the moment – but who knows what the future holds. I’m so proud that we were able to complete the pool in honour of my parents, who poured their love into the build.
"My other favourite room is the conservatory for storm watching. It’s the best view for being warm and enjoying your favourite drink whilst watching all sorts of sea action on the beach below."
What is your favourite piece of furniture in the house and why?
"I love the coffee table in the lounge – it was made by my late father when he started out, and has seen so much love, happiness, sadness and celebrations. It was built lovingly by his hands, and you can feel it in the curves of the wood. I’m so pleased that guests can enjoy special family times around it as well."
What is the best part of the day at The Brigantine?
"The best part of the day is being able to pop down to the beach for an early morning swim, before anyone else is on the sand. That’s closely followed by watching a sunset in the conservatory – as Portreath is on the north coast, the sun sets directly over the ocean here."
What is your favourite way to spend a day in Portreath?
"I’d start my day with a leisurely morning swim in the pool. Then, I’d walk the dogs down on the beach (Portreath is dog friendly all year except for July and August), where they can play on the sand and splash about in the rock pools. I’d then grab a coffee or lunch, or if it’s sunny, enjoy a takeaway on the beach.
"It’s then time for the walk back up the hill to burn those extra calories off! Then, I’d spend the evening playing board games with family and friends in the house – it’s such a homely space and is perfect for making it your own during your stay. I’d make sure I watch the sunset from the conservatory. Perfect!"
