Soak up the summer sun without the crowds on a visit to Cornwall in September. With the beaches emptier but the sea still warmed by the lingering sun, this month is made for restoration and relaxation by the coast.
September in Cornwall is also a time where the local culture comes to life, with a variety of food, music and cultural festivals and events taking place. Beyond the bustle of the summer months, you’ll get a feel for the true buzz that is constant in Cornwall, with its lively and unique culture and heritage coming to the forefront in September.
Whether you’re a young family, a couple looking for a romantic break or just in need of a last minute getaway, September an ideal time to capture the true essence of Cornwall whilst the temperatures are still warm.
September is the perfect time to learn to surf in North Cornwall, as many of our beaches are exposed to swell from the Atlantic. The conditions are often consistent throughout the month, and the water temperatures remain mild, heated by weeks of summer sun. The wind speeds also pick up, providing the perfect conditions to learn how to Kitesurf.
Wavehunters at Watergate Bay provide both surf and paddleboard sessions and are open every day from sunrise to sunset down on the beach. Why not indulge in some active relaxation and try one of their beach yoga or fitness sessions too?
Quieter beaches make for perfect walks. Wait for low tide, where the receding ocean reveals miles of flat, golden sand, leading to hidden caves, coastal nooks and rockpools. Some of our favourite beaches for long walks are the three-mile long Gwithain Towans in Hayle, and the sand dune backed Perranporth beach. Be sure to keep track of tide times to avoid getting cut off, and otherwise enjoy the endless expanse of sand and sea ahead of you. Make sure to pack your swimwear, too, as you may be tempted to dip in the sun-warmed water…
September is festival season in Cornwall. Whether its folk, indie, blues or rock you’re into, there’s bound to be something to suit your taste at one of many live music events held throughout the month. The Little Orchard Cider and Music Festival at Penhallow is a great, family friendly option, with live acts, tasty food and local drink available over three days. Or head to Looe for their annual music, arts and community festival, to finish the summer on a high.
The famous annual fish festival will be taking place down at Newquay harbour this September, on a smaller scale. Yet its reduced size definitely doesn’t mean less flavour! Hear the sizzle of seafood grilling fresh from the ocean and sample melt-in-your-mouth bites whilst local performers create the ambience with live music. There will also be cooking demonstrations, Phil Trebilcock’s Fish Ball on the Friday and many more surprises – not to mention the lovely harbour views.
