There’s something special about Gyllyngvase – or Gylly, as locals affectionately call it. Its laid-back but buzzing vibe is different to many of the spots we visit up and down the coast. Whether it’s pre-dawn dips, midday kayak adventures, or simply gazing out at the sunset, there’s always some sea-based activity happening at Gylly.

Nature abounds

Strolling along the gently curving arc of sand at Gyllyngvase, we’re drawn to the headlands rising on either side of the bay, their edges green with trees that cascade towards the ocean.

Nature can thrive here, both above and below the sea. Today, it’s low tide and the rocky reefs are exposed, offering a glimpse at the hidden underwater world. We pause at the western end of the beach, watching members of The Rock Pool Project explain their findings about anemone, gobies and tiny crabs. After a while, however, we can’t ignore the cravings for our morning coffee fix.

Looking around for where to find that, we see the Tidal Coffee Van – separated from the sand by a small subtropical garden, where agave, aeoniums, and vibrant agapanthus flourish. As we share pleasantries with other morning beach-goers, we sip on our flat whites. Looking out over the sand and the ocean as it melts into an endless horizon.

A gateway to adventure

Today, we’re feeling inquisitive, triggered by the crystal clear water in front of us. We’ve come equipped with masks and snorkels, ready to immerse ourselves in the underwater realm.

Beneath the ocean’s surface, magical kelp forests grow, where long fronds of weed house crabs, lobsters, and fish. This habitat is home to an abundance of wildlife, including seals that lucky divers can spot. Gylly offers an equal abundance of adventure moments from the sand, exploring the wilderness of the South Cornish coastline.

In true Gylly style, around us are fellow water users, making the most of the sun and light winds. Some have rented kayaks and stand-up paddleboards from Blü Paddle Co. As we emerge from the water, we watch them disappear around the corner.

Soon, they will arrive at a series of hidden caves and secret beaches, waiting to be discovered. Reachable from Gyllyngvase but out of sight, these cloister coves are perfect for a private dip, more snorkelling, or enjoying a quiet read.

Brunch with a view

Our time spent in the water has worked up an appetite. We wash the salt from our skin with the beach shower, get dressed and walk to Gylly Beach Café. Positioned on the eastern side of the beach, the café has views over the ocean towards the Lizard and Helford River. It also offers a mean breakfast.

After packing in a lot of beach before lunch, we make the ten-minute walk into town – carrying that sense of calm and relaxation the sea provides.

Dining al fresco, we can take in the views over the sand. We watch morning dippers make their way to the shoreline and young children build sandcastles. Parents enjoy fresh air while pushing prams along the footpath that runs for over half the length of the sand. As one of seven Blue Flag beaches in Cornwall, Gylly is popular with families, recognised for its cleanliness, safety, and facilities.

After packing in a lot of beach before lunch, we make the ten-minute walk into town. In Falmouth, there’s a vibrant mix of harbourside shops, eateries and galleries to sample. We wander around, planning the afternoon activities for when we get back to Gylly.
