Wellness by the water – Cornish spas and saunas by the sea

Beach Retreats team 12 March 2026

Discover a new elemental world in Cornwall’s growing Nordic spa culture, where the rituals of heat, cold and sea air come together along the coastline. From pop-up saunas set right on the sand to hidden Nordic-inspired spas tucked into the landscape, these spaces invite you to slow down and reconnect with the elements.

A sauna by the beach is an experience in itself – warming up with the sound of waves nearby before stepping out into the fresh Atlantic air or a brisk sea dip. Elsewhere, Nordic-style spas offer a deeper contrast experience, with saunas, hot tubs and icy plunge pools designed to be enjoyed in sequence, helping to boost circulation, soothe tired muscles and reset after long coastal walks.

It’s easy to see why this culture is taking hold in Cornwall. With wild waters and open horizons, the landscape lends itself naturally to these simple, restorative practices. Part of a wider focus on blue health – the wellbeing benefits of being near water – these coastal wellness spaces offer a chance to pause, breathe deeply and experience the shoreline in a new way.

We’ve handpicked some of our favourite spots around the Cornish coast, from beachside saunas where you can run straight into the sea, to secluded Nordic spas where hot and cold therapy comes with wide ocean views.

Saunassa, Newquay

Saunassa Nordic Spa creates the full elemental experience with cold plunge pools, hot tubs, a traditional sauna and an infrared sauna. Tucked away in a courtyard in Newquay, minutes from the beach, Saunassa have crafted a calming space for wellbeing, relaxation and social connection.

Here, indulge in contrast therapy, where you flow between the heat and steam of the sauna and hot tubs to the cold-water baths. This Nordic experience is all about stimulating circulation, supporting recovery, boosting immunity and reducing inflammation.

Book in for a morning sauna and ice baths, enjoy longer ‘slow flow’ sessions, or join guided classes that weave the sauna into practices like breathwork, primal movement, and yoga.

Take high-tide dips and watch the boats from its winter spot in Newquay Harbour, admire the surfers and wild waves from Fistral Beach in early spring, or gaze out at scarlet sunsets from Bedruthan Steps in the summer months. Enhance the experience with a salt scrub or eucalyptus whisk massage to help muscles relax.
