The perfect spot for staring out to sea and switching off from the world

Hear how Kat from Beach Retreats got on during her stay at Coastmans Nest in Mawgan Porth, Cornwall.
Living in Newquay my partner and I, plus our 5 month old daughter are already spoilt with beautiful North Cornwall beaches, but our visit to nearby Mawgan Porth will still rank as one of our favourite weekends ever!
Mawgan Porth lies at the bottom of a steep, winding hill which as you descend reveals incredible views of the large sandy beach below, neatly dissected by the river Menalhyl. When we first arrived at Coastmans Nest we were met with a thick sea mist which gave the whole cove an eerie feel. As we settled in, the fog began to lift to reveal wonderful blue skies. The weather continued to improve and it became quite clear how well positioned Coastman’s Nest really was, with its stunning sea views.
Coastmans Nest is a beautifully presented property with plenty of room for all three generations. The two living spaces meant we could have the evening to ourselves. The grandparents relaxed downstairs, close to our daughter, whilst we had the whole top floor, relaxing with a glass of wine, whilst looking out to sea.
The views over Mawgan Porth beach and the village are truly breathtaking. The outside space includes a large terrace with a built in BBQ, a beautiful lawned garden and a roof terrace. The large windows in every room really make the most of the views. The garden is not too overlooked by other houses, which made it very peaceful, perfect for a relaxing holiday in Cornwall.
Out and about:
Mawgan Porth Village is only a short walk from the house with a selection of shops, pubs, restaurants and a fantastc fish and chips take away. The beautiful beach is a 600 metre walk from the house, so there was no need to take the car. It was great being able to park at the house and then have everything you need within easy walking distance.
If you want to venture out of Mawgan Porth then the coast path is a short walk from the house and takes you past the memorable rock formations of the Bedruthan Steps in just 20 minutes. In the opposite direction, you can walk to Watergate Bay in just under an hour. Both walks offer stunning views of the north coast.
If we had more time, we would have jumped in the car and drove to Constantine Bay, a picturesque spot just 12 minutes away. Padstow is an easy 15 minute car ride, whilst the A30 is also within easy reach, if you fancy a trip further down south.
Eating out:
Though we thoroughly enjoyed staying in and making use of the built in BBQ at the house, we highly recommend a visit to Catch Seafood Bar & Grill, located in the village down. For a more informal dining experience, try the Merrymoor Inn, a great local pub with a beer garden that overlooks the beach.
We enjoyed Sunday lunch at Scott and Babs, which is located at Retorrick Mill, just a few minutes inland from Mawgan Porth beach. They offer fresh and vibrant menus that change daily with home grown and locally sourced produce – we loved it!
If you fancy something really special, try The Herring Restaurant or Wild Cafe at Bedruthan Hotel. Both welcome families and non residents.
Highlights
The sense of calm in and around the house, it made us feel so relaxed, we really didn’t want to leave.
A house for three generations or two families – we loved the two separate living rooms.
The views! The views! The views! There’s nothing better than waking up to the sight of the ocean.
