Bodmin Moor is often thought of as the poor cousin to Dartmoor and Exmoor – we prefer to see it as one of Cornwall’s best kept secrets. Throughout the spring and summer, when the other moors are teeming with crowds, Bodmin Moor offers a rare opportunity to get well and truly off the beaten track and enjoy some serious space to yourself. Scramble to the top of any of the tors (such as Cornwall’s highest point, a 420m high hill called Brown Willy) and you’ll be treated to some incredible views, sometimes even spanning one coast to the other.
Walkers are in heaven on Bodmin Moor; this lovely corner of wilderness provides great routes whatever your fitness levels and time frame. Wherever you wander you’ll see wild ponies by the dozen and all kinds of birdlife. Strange and fascinating natural structures like the famous Cheesewring, a stack of giant rocks seemingly precariously balanced, litter the moor and add to the prehistoric feel. The Cheesewring is a short, easy walk from the village of Minions, which has two good cafes for tea and cake and Cornwall’s highest pub. Watch out for the sheep grazing on the village green.
For those who prefer a little more structure to a day out, Siblyback Lake has an activities centre where adrenaline junkies can try wakeboarding, sailing, windsurfing and a high ropes adventure course, with lessons for beginners or hire for the more experienced.
The stables at Hallagenna Farm near St Breward couldn’t be in a better place when it comes to exploring Bodmin Moor on horseback. The farm offers pony treks for all abilities and for all ages from 5 years upwards; riding across this glorious landscape without the interruption of traffic is a lovely way to escape the real world for a few hours.
After a stomp across the moor a pub lunch seems only right; two popular venues are the Blisland Inn, famous for real ales, and the Old Inn at St Breward, where the Sunday lunch is a big draw.
