PORTH BEACH
Where is Porth Beach?
Actually on the outskirts of Newquay – far enough away to avoid the nightlife, yet easily walkable along the coastal path. The walk takes around 45 minutes depending on your energy levels and is recommended for the fantastic views along the cliffs and beaches.
Walking along the coastal path in the other direction for 30 minutes and you will find yourself in Watergate Bay, home to Fifteen Cornwall, the Beach Hut and Extreme Academy.
What’s there?
Not much – a seasonal cafe, the Mermaid pub on the beach and that’s about it. Of course the beach is the draw. Another example of this piece of coastline’s sandy expanse flanked by the cliffs and perpetual ebb of tide which reveals rockpools and nooks and crannies to explore.
Walk around the east side of the beach to find some great photo opportunities as you cross the footbridge onto Porth Island.
Will my kids like it?
Porth Beach is great for building sandcastles and rockpooling and beach games.
Where can I walk the dog?
Not on the beach during the summer. As with many beaches in Cornwall, access is limited to between October 1st to Easter Day.
Will I go hungry?
The Mermaid pub serves food from its beach-front location in Porth, but that’s about it. There is a seasonal cafe, also on the beach, and if you are luck an ice-cream van may pull up.
That’s all fine, I just need some facts:
- Parking – there is a pay and display car-park across the road at the touring park, otherwise it is limited. You can park actually on the beach but watch out for the tide…
- Food and Drink – The Mermaid pub on the beach and a seasonal cafe. There are convenience stores and more pubs and restaurants in the area, as you drive or walk into Newquay.
- Toilets – yes.
- Dog on a beach? – allowed between October 1st and Easter Day only.
