Watergate Bay on the north coast of Cornwall, is famous for its sheer size and grandeur – almost three miles of perfect sand at low tide, backed by monumental cliffs that teem with bird life. This is one of Cornwall’s most contemporary destinations, with exceptional facilities including the Extreme Academy, which offers a great range of adrenaline sports, the Jamie Oliver-inspired restaurant, Fifteen Cornwall and the legendary Beach Hut. Throughout the year, a wide range of events are held at Watergate, from surf and kitesurf competitions and Zapcat racing to beach polo and family fun days. |

The kind of beach kids dream of, Porth, on the north coast of Cornwall, has soft sand, rock pools galore, a stream flowing down to the shoreline and even an island with a wooden bridge across to it. Lifeguards patrol the beach from May to September, making it safe for swimming, surfing and body boarding. Even during the height of summer, Porth provides a sense of peace, with just a couple of cafés, a pub and a handy convenience store to distract you from the pleasures of the beach. |

Polzeath is a lively resort close to Padstow and Rock, on the north coast of Cornwall with a string of shops, cafes and restaurants lining the edge of the beach. There’s a slightly bohemian feel to Polzeath; it’s all about surfer chic and barefoot living here. There are some good, contemporary dining venues in the bay, including the Oystercatcher pub and the Saltwater Café, both of which are positioned high on the cliffs with superb views over the beach, and the Waterfront Café, which is right on the sand. Polzeath is famous for its surf, and the beach has its own resident surf school, Surf’s Up. |

Fistral is a dramatic headland providing stunning views north along the coast to Watergate Bay and beyond. The famous surfing beach of Fistral, with its busy calendar of sports and music events and its cluster of great restaurants, shops and bars, is ‘cool’ Cornwall at its most contemporary. Within walking distance of Newquay’s attractions, it is also close to Pentire which is a quiet spot offering a relaxing holiday escape. |

A wide beach on the north coast of Cornwall, backed by high dunes, Mawgan Porth is classically pretty with its waterfall, stunning rock formations and green-topped cliffs . At low tide, the beach here reveals a huge expanse of sand, perfect for sand castles, kite flying and beach games. Close to the beach you’ll find a shop cum deli selling all the essentials plus some luxuries, a pub and a restaurant, but otherwise Mawgan Porth is characterised by its ‘off the beaten path’ character and relaxed feel. |
