Mawgan Porth , Cornwall
With a wide open beach backed by high dunes, Mawgan Porth is emerging as a popular coastal destination especially for families and their dogs all year round. Ideal for sand castle building or surfing, the beach also has a nearby shop cum delicatessen as well as Fire, a grill and bar serving breakfasts, lunches and dinners overlooking the sands. The Merrymoor Inn is a family friendly pub with a great patio from which to enjoy a sundowner from the selection of real ales and whiskies. Café Indigo at the Bedruthan Steps Hotel is great for winter lunches, frothy hot chocolates with a separate section for families and children’s menu. The Kingsurf school provides fun and safe tuition for all levels of surfing skills with warm, dry changing facilities – all important on those chilly autumn days when the water still tempts you in. To the north of Mawgan Porth is Trevose Head with the nearby Golf Course – look out for the Holy Well located on the short course and of course those great views out to sea. A short walk away is Bedruthan Steps, with dramatic clifftop views and steps down to the beach. Newquay is just 6 miles from Mawgan Porth and Wadebridge is 12 mile journey, a pretty market town on the Camel estuary with a mix of cafes, restaurants and boutique shops. Hire a bike or walk along the level Camel Trail to Bodmin or Padstow and enjoy views of estuary and wildlife along the way. The Eden Project is located 19 miles away by road or you could visit Dairyland Farm World near Newquay. For local produce, try Bre-Pen, a National Trust farm with tea garden and food shop including meats, bread, jams, chutneys, wine, cider, home made cakes and vegetables or Gluvian Farm for home reared beef and lamb and fruit.
